Facility management for licensed child care centres
Centre directors should spend their day on children and families, not chasing plumbers and inspection paperwork. Orbit runs the building side of every centre, to one standard, with records ready for your program advisor and public health inspector.
Inspection-ready
The building items your licence depends on
| Area | What the rules require | What Orbit does |
|---|---|---|
| Drinking water and lead | Plumbing is flushed daily or weekly, depending on plumbing age and test history. Fixtures are sampled for lead each year between May 1 and October 31, or every three years once a centre qualifies for reduced sampling.O. Reg. 243/07, Safe Drinking Water Act | Run the flushing schedule and keep the log, book sampling with an accredited lab and act the same day on any exceedance. |
| Playgrounds | Outdoor play spaces meet CAN/CSA-Z614. Staff complete daily and monthly written checks. Playgrounds with fixed equipment need an annual written report from a certified playground inspector, and a repair log is kept.Child care centre licensing manual, Part 4 | Book the annual inspection, top up protective surfacing, repair equipment and close every deficiency in the repair log. |
| Building and equipment | Premises, play materials and equipment are kept safe and in good repair, free of hazards to children.O. Reg. 137/15, Child Care and Early Years Act | Preventive maintenance, fast repairs to doors, gates, fixtures and finishes, and child-safe materials. |
| Fire and life safety | Fire extinguishers and emergency lighting are checked monthly, and fire alarm systems are inspected every year.Ontario Fire Code | Do the monthly checks, coordinate licensed fire protection contractors and track deficiencies to closed. |
| Pests and sanitation | Public health inspects for pests and sanitary conditions, especially in kitchens and food areas. | Licensed pest control on a set schedule with service logs, plus repairs that close entry points. |
This summary is a guide, not legal advice. Your licence conditions, municipality, insurer and inspectors may add requirements. We build each site’s program from its own documents and inspection history.
On site
Our crews follow your centre’s rules, not just ours
Vulnerable sector checks
Ontario requires them for centre staff, volunteers and students. We hold our crews and trade partners to the same standard.
Work outside program hours
Noisy, dusty or hazardous work happens before opening, after closing or in rooms that are closed off.
Never alone with children
Crews sign in, follow your visitor procedure and are never left unsupervised with children.
Nothing left behind
Tools, fasteners, chemicals and debris are accounted for before a room or yard reopens.
Child-safe products
Low-odour, low-VOC paints and sealants, with safety data sheets on file.
Directors kept informed
The director knows who is coming, when, and what was done.

Questions
Child care centres: common questions
Can you manage centres in different municipalities?
Yes. Each centre gets its own calendar built around its licence, municipality and public health unit, and you see every centre in one report.
Who does the annual playground inspection?
For playgrounds with fixed equipment, a certified playground inspector does the annual inspection. We book it, attend, and repair the deficiencies.
Do your workers have vulnerable sector checks?
Yes. Everyone we send to a child care site, including trade partners, must hold a current police vulnerable sector check.
